What Grade Should I Use When Choosing Aluminum Coil

Lightweight and corrosion resistant, aluminum is the most widely used non-ferrous metal. Aluminum's physical properties are well suited for use in industries such as automotive, aerospace and defense. But in other industries, such as construction and energy, aluminum's thermal and electrical conductivity properties make it most attractive.

For aluminum coil, plate or sheet, choosing the right grade for your application usually boils down to answering two simple questions: What are the properties and where will it be used?

What grade should I use when choosing aluminum coil, plate or sheet?

When it comes to aluminum, choosing the right grade for your application usually boils down to answering two simple questions.

What are the properties?

Where is it used?

Let's focus on some non-heat treatable (common) alloy grades.

Aluminum Sheet

Aluminum Sheet

1100

What are the properties: This commercially pure aluminum (minimum 99.00%) has excellent corrosion resistance, machinability and weldability, as well as high electrical conductivity. It has a tensile strength range of 14 to 24 KSI and conforms to AMS QQ-A-250/1 and ASTM B209.

Uses: 1100 is used for deep drawing, spinning, sheet metal working, decorative and architectural applications.

3003

What are the properties: This aluminum grade is alloyed with 1-2% manganese to provide a tensile strength range of 17 to 30 KSI. It has excellent workability, weldability and corrosion resistance in accordance with AMS QQ-A-250/2 and ASTM B209.

Applications: When a slightly higher strength grade than 1100 is necessary, 3003 is often the right fit. It is used for drawing, spinning, fuel tanks and sheet metal work, among other applications.

5005

What are the properties: 5005 is alloyed with 0.8% magnesium and has a tensile strength range of 18 to 30 KSI and excellent machinability, weldability and corrosion resistance. The grade conforms to Federal Specification ASTM B209.

Applications: This grade is suitable for applications requiring anodizing comparable to 1100 and 3003. The anodizing is compatible with construction alloy 6063.
